Saturday morning fishin' session 10.3.20

'Lil Shaka and I made it out to our favorite fishing spot Saturday morning. Since it is now fall, and the temperature in the ponds is dropping, the bass are supposed to be biting right? Just throw anything into the lake and they will bite?  Of course not!

What was I successful using?

I threw a blue and black jig the last time we were at this lake, but really had no confidence with it.  I didn't give up though.  I through a Jig in this session called "The Finance Jig" by Booyah Bait Co.  This was the 1/2 oz version which seems to be perfect for my bait caster which is 6ft medium fishing rod.

What I would say is don't give up on these jigs.  I see guys killin' the bass with them, especially in the fall when the fish get really active.  I gained a little confidence with the Booyah Finance Jig today by catching two bass on it.

What I think I am starting to understand is how to actually retrieve the bait so the fish see it.  I used a slower retrieve and they hit the jig right when the jig was dropping.

The only other thing I did was add a TRD CrawZ that you see in the below picture.  I bought these a couple years ago and have never really used them.  They are the perfect size to be added to the Booyah Finance Jig 1/2 oz.

I was pumped up to catch bass for the first time on a jig setup.  I have now proven to myself that it can be done!  We have another fishing trip later this fall where I think I can definitely use the jig to catch some bass!  More to come on that in the future.

'Lil Shaka, the true winner of the day...

'Lil Man was the true winner because he caught the most fish!  He was using live bait worms, and we rigged his pole up first with a Carolina-Rig style and a bobber.  I don't think that was working very well.  We had trouble setting hooks after nice bites.

I ended up taking the bobber off and just showing him how to allow the fish to really take the worm before setting the hook.  Sure enough, he caught a bluegill and then a bass almost right away!

Wednesday Skunk Fishin' Session 9-30-20

Last Day in September 2020

Yesterday was a fun little bike ride down to a neighborhood lake.  It was nice and sunny, but man it was windy.  I noticed the water was super muddy as the wind was blowing the currents violently across the lake at times.  So, I don't think I had much of a chance of the fish truly seeing my lures.

Although, I did get a few bites.  Skunked!  Went home without catching a fish.  I failed to connect on two different occasions.  Seemed like I had the fish on, but then missed setting the hook.  Both times this happened was on plastic worms.

Overall, a fun time in the sun was had.  Fall is here so I am happy when I can get a little time out on the water, and still enjoy the sun.  Here in the midwest winters there are times we don't see the sun for weeks, so I will cherish the sunshine as much as I can.

Tuesday afternoon fishin' session 9-29-2020

Okay, the weather was not very favorable.  Overcast...windy...a fisherman's nightmare?  Maybe.  We drove up the road to one of our favorite fishing spots where I have caught some very nice fish.  There are two lakes there.  We worked both lakes quite hard, but the fish just weren't biting.

The good news is that what you see here is the 'Lil Shaka catching a nice crappie on a Rebel Craw.  This happened on the first cast of his spinning reel combo!  But then, after that, we had no bites. As always, even if the fish aren't biting I cherish the time with my son and the chance to get outside.

'Lil Shaka Pulls Them In

Look at this dude! Well, I am happy to report that he caught 11 of these little fighters.  These are little sunfish in a local pond we ride our bikes to near our neighborhood.  Guess what I caught?  Nothing!  ShakaOG gets Skunked!  He was catching all of these sunfish on Crappie Nibble by Powerbait.  I was using my good ol' plastic worm.  I was getting bites, but nothing really wanted to hold on to it.

The weather is really starting to reflect the fall now.  We got a little rain while we were there, but nothing crazy.  It was definitely more windy out and the air temperature was a little cooler.  The fall is here!

Reconnaissance mission, new fishin' hole Sunday 9-27-2020

'Lil Shaka and I were in full baseball tournament mode during the weekend.  We had to leave for the tournament for a game around noon on Sunday.  If we won that game, we would be in the championship.  That being said, I got my butt up early and headed out to a neighborhood lake that I have never fished before.  We have been on bike rides in this neighborhood, but I never fished the lake.

So, I decided to take a little bike ride with my fishing tackled on this Sunday morning.  Well, as you can see in the picture the bass are in this lake. 😀 What was interesting was I caught this bass on my second cast on the good ol' black plastic worm.  Then, not another bite for an hour.  Then I had to head out and get ready for the tournament.  But, I was happy I was able to hook into a bass on this day.

There is definitely something about getting out early to fish.  It calms my nerves.  It is quiet, even in a big neighborhood where this lake sits.  It was a great day, and I am happy to report that the 'Lil Shaka and his team won their baseball tournament later in the day.

Scouted new fishin' hole on Friday afternoon 9-25-2020

I hit up a new place this day.  This was a community park in a town that I grew up in not too far from where we live now.  I was able to hook into a couple of bluegill.  As you can see one of them went for my plastic worm.  The bluegill in the bottom picture I snagged up top.  Headshot with the treble hook! 😀

I fished in two different lakes in the park.  The first one seemed to be very cloudy or muddy.  And, of course in this lake, I had no bites.  When I moved over to the other lake, I noticed the water was much more clear.  This is where I was able to catch a few bluegill.  The bass have to be in this lake!  But, I did not get any bites.  It could also be the case that these lakes see quite a bit of fishing as it is a local park. The park was clean and the lakes were pretty.  Here are a couple of pics below.  It was a nice sunny day to fish in the afternoon.  I am enjoying this fall outdoors, and it has helped me mentally during this time of the Covid pandemic.

Baseball and Fishin' session Thursday 9-24-20

Well, we headed back out to the local park to hit some baseballs and do some fishing.  'Lil Shaka had a baseball tournament to stay sharp for, so we got some practice on this day.  I did not catch any fish but look at this little bass he caught on the Rebel Craw!  Pretty Cool!

Monday afternoon fishing session 9-21-20

After our fishing excursion the day before, 'Lil Shaka and I just could not get enough.  The next day, in the late afternoon we decided to fish at another fishin' hole in our town.  It is a local park that has a decent size lake.  I caught this one on a plastic worm again.

'Lil Man caught his on the Rebel Craw!

Here is another one I caught on the Rebel Craw as well.  It seems the bass are smaller in this lake as you can see above. The biggest one I have caught so far in this lake is about a pound.  But, we won't give up, I think they are in there.

Sunday morning fishin' session 9-20-20

'Lil Shaka and I woke up early and headed out to one of our favorite lakes.  We took some good friends with us this time to enjoy the fun.  As you can see by the pictures we were able to do very well catching fish!  On the day, our entire fishing crew caught largemouth bass, bluegill, and crappie.

All of the bass I caught were caught on plastic worms in the Texas Rig Style. Some of the bass had a nice healthy dark color as you can see above.

Check out a little recap video of our adventure above!

'Lil Shaka caught a nice bass!

They were hitting the plastic worms!  That's it for now.  It was a very fun day of fishing and the weather was a beautiful, sunny, September day.
